The construction is very simple.

1. The timber parts are bandsawn out to the patterns shown in the drawing and then sanded up smooth.

2. There are three pieces of timber to each side and these are laid out as per the drawing so that the holes can be drilled through one side at a time and then one side can be used to mark off the holes in the other side. At this stage I finished the sun bed timbers with a couple of coats of Finishing Oil.

3. The screw studding is cut to length.

4. One side is bolted together and the other side bolted up to line up with the first side ( the decorative tee nuts can be tightened with an allen key ).

5. The screw studding and the brass or steel tubing cut to length. Remember to cut the two outer tubing and studding longer than the inner two (see plan view above) by twice the thickness of the timber involved.

6. Assemble the sides together, with the screw studding running inside the tubing to act as a spacer.

7. Measure the length apart of the two top pieces of tubing, ( in my case this was about 67" ) and allow enough sag to form a nice hammock shape. This can be easily done with a piece of string, ( 72" was sufficient with a 1" loop at either end ).

8. Machine a loop of material at either end sufficient to allow the insertion of the tubing to hang the material from. I would recommend you double stitch for strength and use strong nylon thread. the width of my material was 20" and therefore dictated the length of the screw studding and tubing.

9. Simply unscrew one side and slide on the material and screw the side back on.

10. I would recommend several hours of rigorous testing with a large glass of your favorite tipple !

What about a double size sun bed ? In this case I would beef up the size of the tubing to take the extra weight and may increase the size of the studding or increase the number.

This particular sunbed was made by a young student under the guidence of Richard Nice.
